Lead Visa Specialist

This position is located in the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Visa Services Directorate, Office of Domestic Operations, Remote Processing Division. This Division supports consular posts in need of additional nonimmigrant visa adjudication capacity by reviewing and adjudicating applications eligible for interview waiver (IW). The Lead Visa Specialist serves as a subject matter expert on IW adjudication and leads a team of Visa Specialists performing this work.


  • Coordinates with partner post visa section on daily workload assignments, systems issues, policy changes, adjudication norms, application intake and case preparation errors, and cases requiring special attention or processing.
  • Researches, interprets, and applies visa regulations, policies, and requirements, including 9 FAM 403.5-4 guidance and Department of State authorities, to determine interview waiver eligibility.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert on visa legislation, regulation, and the adjudication of complex nonimmigrant visa cases that qualify for interview waiver.
  • Interprets interview waiver policies, adjudicates cases, and advises visa specialists on interview waiver eligibility and nonimmigrant visa adjudication.

Requirements

Applicants must meet all the required qualification requirements described below by the closing date of this announcement. NOTE: Applicants must meet time-in-grade and time after competitive appointment requirements, by the closing date of this announcement. Time-In-Grade Requirements: Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade to satisfy time-in-grade restrictions, per 5CFR 300, Subpart F. Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service which provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Qualifying specialized experience must include: • Adjudicating nonimmigrant visa applications; • Interpreting and applying laws and regulations to questions of visa eligibility; and • Modifying guidelines and developing new methods to improve organizational effectiveness.
